How it works

Start with the basic monthly rate for your rating and dependent status. VA's basic rates already include one child.

Add VA's 'added amounts' for each extra child under 18, each extra child 18–23 in a school program, and a spouse who receives Aid and Attendance.

At 10% and 20%, VA pays the same amount whether or not you have dependents.

VA adjusts these rates every December 1 for the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). The rates used here are dated below.

Frequently asked questions

Do dependents raise my pay at 10% or 20%?

No. VA only adds money for dependents when your combined rating is 30% or higher.

Does the basic rate include a child?

Yes. The basic rates 'with child' include one child. Each additional child adds VA's added amount for that rating.

When do the rates change?

Every December 1, when VA applies the cost-of-living adjustment. This calculator shows the date of the rates it uses.

Is VA disability pay taxed?

VA disability compensation is not taxable income under federal law.
