How it works
Basic pay depends on two things: your pay grade and your cumulative years of service. DFAS publishes a new table each January.
Columns step up at set points: 2 or less, over 2, over 3, over 4, then every 2 years up to over 40.
Officers in O-1 to O-3 with more than 4 years of prior enlisted or warrant officer service are paid from a separate, higher table (O-1E, O-2E, O-3E).
BAS is a monthly allowance for food. Enlisted members and officers get different rates. BAS isn't taxable.
This doesn't include BAH (housing), special pays or deductions. Your Leave and Earnings Statement (LES) shows your actual pay.
Frequently asked questions
When does military pay change?
New basic pay tables take effect each January 1. This calculator shows the date of the table it uses.
Why is there no amount for some years?
DFAS doesn't list pay for some grades at low years of service, for example E-9 under 10 years, because members don't normally hold those grades that early.
What is O-1E?
O-1E, O-2E and O-3E are higher rates for officers who served more than 4 years as enlisted members or warrant officers before commissioning.
Is basic pay taxable?
Basic pay is taxable income. BAS and BAH are not taxable.
