VA Combined Rating Calculator

VA doesn't add ratings together. It applies each rating to what's left of your 'efficiency,' then rounds to the nearest 10. Enter your ratings to see your combined rating and exactly how VA gets there.

Separate with commas, e.g. 50, 30, 10. Don't include bilateral ratings here.
Optional. Ratings for paired limbs, e.g. 10, 10 for both knees.

How it works

Ratings are sorted from highest to lowest (38 CFR §4.25).

The first rating leaves you a percentage 'efficient.' Each next rating applies only to what's left. For example, 60% leaves 40% efficient; a further 30% takes 30% of that 40%, for 72 combined.

VA reads each step from its Combined Ratings Table and rounds only once, at the end, to the nearest 10. Values ending in 5 round up.

Bilateral factor (38 CFR §4.26): ratings on both arms or both legs are combined first, then 10% of that value is added, and the result is treated as one rating.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't 50% + 30% = 80%?

VA combines ratings instead of adding them. 50% and 30% combine to 65, which rounds up to 70%.

What is the bilateral factor?

When disabilities affect both arms or both legs, VA combines those ratings and adds 10% of the result before combining with your other ratings.

When does VA round?

Once, after all ratings are combined. Earlier steps use the exact value from the table.
