How it works

BAH depends on three things: your duty station's Military Housing Area (MHA), your pay grade and whether you have dependents.

DTMO sets a rate for every MHA and pay grade each year, based on local rent and utility costs. New rates take effect January 1.

Your duty station ZIP code decides your MHA, not where you choose to live.

BAH isn't taxable. Rate protection means your BAH generally won't go down while you stay at the same duty station, even if the new year's rate is lower.

Frequently asked questions

Is BAH based on where I live or where I'm stationed?

Where you're stationed. BAH uses your permanent duty station's ZIP code, no matter where you live.

What is a county cost group?

Areas without a nearby military housing area are grouped by county cost. If your ZIP code points to one, that's the correct rate for that area.

Why is O-7 the top grade?

DTMO publishes one BAH rate for O-7 and above.

When do BAH rates change?

New rates take effect every January 1. DTMO occasionally adjusts an area mid-year; this calculator flags those changes.
